CREATING HAPPY FAMILIES - WHAT PARENTS CAN DO


Wellness is a term which implies  a wide range of  conditions.
One of them is  a healhy family as also a happy family .

Creating wellness around also means creating happy families around.
Members of a family can foster happiness  and harmony  by choice ,
Parents in a family have a much greater role to play in creating happy
families.

Many a social thinkers have written a lot about creating happy families.
Many have also come up with strategies to  building a happy  family.

As we are fast approaching the New Year 2014, we all look forward to more
happiness and greater joy in our homes in the hear ahead.  But how many of us
have a plan of action to  indeed achieve it by conscious effort?

WAYS TO BUILD YOUR CHILD'S POSITIVE SELF-ESTEEM by Richard D.Lavoie


Your child is a unique individual- a unique gift to you from God. How you treasure this gift,
and mould  this gift to be a blessing to the society  is your responsibility as a parent.
The first and foremost quality that a child needs to become   competent, selfassured, and  mature
adult later  in life , is  positive SELF-ESTEEM .

A dynamic relationship exists between self-esteem and skill development. As a child improves in self-esteem, his academic competence increases. And as that competence increases, his self-esteem improves. The caring and concerned caregiver must come to realize that positive self-esteem is both a prerequisite and a consequence of
academic success. Here are 20 tips to help foster a child's self-esteem:
 
1) Value each child as an individual with unique strengths, needs, interests and skills.
2) Focus on the child's strengths. Emphasize and celebrate his "islands of competence."
3) Reject the child's behavior, but never reject the child. Use affectionate terms and nicknames when scolding ("Your room is a mess, honey. Now turn off the TV and make your bed.").
4) Remember that sincere interest can be more effective and meaningful than praise. Demonstrate a genuine interest in her activities, hobbies, etc.
5) Establish realistic, achievable goals for your child. Anticipate success.
6) Avoid using sarcasm with kids - children with language problems often misinterpret it.
7) When discussing an issue or a problem, avoid bringing up past difficulties.
8) Never compare one child to another.
9) Help the child develop decision-making and problem-solving skills.
10) Understand that mistakes are an inevitable (and valuable!) part of any learning experience. Use these as an opportunity to teach and assist.
11) Divide large tasks into smaller, manageable ones. This will ensure success, mastery, and retention.
12) Maintain a file of his academic work. Use this to demonstrate his progress and development when he is feeling down.
13) Encourage him to maintain "collections" (e.g., baseball cards, stamps, rocks, etc.). This allows him to be the resident expert on a topic.
14) If she does not participate in team sports, promote individual sports (e.g., skiing, golf, swimming). This will  provide opportunities for success, exercise, and peer interaction.
15) Communicate your confidence in the child and in her future.
16) Permit and encourage the child to follow the normal fads of his peer group (e.g., clothing, music). This will  enhance his acceptance at school and in the community.
17) Emphasize the positive aspects of her behavior or performance, even if the task was not completely successful. Reward direction, not perfection.
18) Anticipate that the child will have plateaus, failures, backslides, setbacks, and regressions. Support and encourage him at these times. Kids need love most when they deserve it least!
19) Look for opportunities to offer him choices to allow him to practice decision-making skills.
20) Never, ever, communicate disappointment to your child. The disappointment of an adult may be too great  a burden for a child to carry.
Remember:
· Your child's self-esteem will be determined by the conditional acceptance that he receives from others -
and the unconditional acceptance that he receives from you and
· Your child's self-esteem will be determined by success and progress in four areas:
o Social (acceptance, friendships)
o Competence (in a skill area)
o Physical (clothing, attractiveness)
o Character (effort, generosity, etc.)
Emphasize, recognize and reinforce all four areas!

8 Tricks Your Ancestors Knew About Preparing Healthy Food
Traditional food preparation techniques do more than just preserve food. They remove natural toxins and increase nutrients, as well as the body’s ability to fully use them. 
 
They fully utilised their   mental, creative, and physical faculties  to create wholesome nourishing foods with all the love and affection they can for the entire family.  In all such efforts by a housewife,   she was ably  assisted by her neighbours, neighbour's children,  their own children
and other kith and kin  who stayed nearby.  By such a collective effort the following benefits to community  was conferred:
A greater bonding amongst members of a family as also their neighbours  and other kith and kin.
This lead to mutual respet as well as  a greater  scope for mutual sharing of  household chores
which is too much for  a single housewife.  Mutual help within a community was  so very
common  and  was voluntairly offerred.
 
The next benefit was the free training the younger children were getting whilst joining such mutual  help exercises.  They learnt social skiills,  social etiquettes,  knowledge and skills about  preparing variou dishes , like  the proportions of the various ingredients  to be used whilst preparing a dish
and much more.  
 
Traditional homes were thus excellent training grounds for many a social and household skills 
which  no   modern schoiol can teach by way of a classroom .
 
 Modern day housewives just buy readymade things from shops and eateries  anbd miss the very essence of  the fun and  fellowship our  ancestors enjoyed whilst preparings dishes at home .

1. Fermenting
Acetic acid, lactic acid, and alcohol act as natural preservatives. Improves digestibility because microbes have predigested. Can create new nutrients, especially B vitamins. Adds helpful bacteria.

2. Soaking
Improves digestibility. Reduces phytic acid, allowing absorption of more minerals, such as iron and calcium.
Soaking grains breaks down phytic acid, a substance that prevents the absorption of minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc.
Also, as grains soak, vitamin content increases, especially B vitamins.
3. Sprouting
Deactivates enzyme inhibitors, making the sprouted seed more digestible.
4. Nixtamalization
Soaking corn with lime (calcium hydroxide) or wood ashes (potassium hydroxide) increases digestibility and bioavailability of niacin, protein, and calcium. Decreases phytic acid and harmful mycotoxins.

5. Pounding
Removes the bran or hull of a seed or grain, which contain most of the antinutrients. Increases digestibility.

6. Drying
Removes moisture, slowing bacterial growth.

7. Salt curing
Draws water out of cells, killing microorganisms and preventing spoilage. Salt denatures meat proteins and produces glutamate, which enhances flavor.
8. Smoking
Dries meat and adds phenolic compounds that bind to the surface of the food and act as antioxidants, preventing rancidity.

Chemicals in Cosmetics

When it comes to beauty products, the effects of the ingredients they contain can be more than just skin deep. The cosmetics industry uses thousands of synthetic chemicals in its products, in everything from lipstick and lotion to shampoo and shaving cream.
Many of these substances are also used in industrial manufacturing processes to clean industrial equipment, stabilize pesticides and grease gears. And we can all agree that an ingredient that effectively scours a garage floor may not be the best choice for a facial cleanser.
In the U.S., major loopholes in federal law allow the cosmetics industry to put thousands of synthetic chemicals into personal care products, even if those chemicals are linked to cancer, infertility or birth defects. At the same time as untested chemicals have been steadily introduced into our environment, breast cancer incidence has risen dramatically.
Following are some of the chemicals commonly found in cosmetics and what they do to us.

Phthalates

Phthalates are a group of endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are found in cosmetics like nail polish and in synthetic fragrance—both perfumes and fragrance ingredients in other cosmetic products. Phthalate exposure has been linked to early puberty in girls, a risk factor for later-life breast cancer. Some phthalates also act as weak estrogens in cell culture systems.

Triclosan

Triclosan is used in antibacterial soaps, deodorants and toothpastes to limit the growth of bacteria and mold. The chemical, which is classified as a pesticide, can affect the body’s hormone systems—especially thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism—and may disrupt normal breast development. Widespread use of triclosan may also contribute to bacterial resistance to antimicrobial agents.

1,4-dioxane

1,4-dioxane is not listed on ingredient labels. It is a petroleum-derived contaminant formed in the manufacture of shampoos, body wash, children’s bath products and other sudsing cosmetics. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has ranked it as a possible carcinogen, and the National Toxicology Program (NTP) has identified it as a reasonably anticipated carcinogen.

Parabens

Parabens are a group of compounds widely used as an antifungal agent, preservative and antimicrobial in creams, lotions, ointments and other cosmetics, including underarm deodorants. They are absorbed through the skin and have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors.

Ethylene Oxide

Ethylene oxide is found in fragrances and is commonly used to manufacture popular brands of shampoo. It is classified as a known human carcinogen and is one of the 48 chemicals that the National Toxicology Program (NTP) identifies as mammary carcinogens in animals.

1,3-butadiene

Shaving creams, spray sunscreens and foundations, and anti-fungal treatments that contain the propellant isobutene may be contaminated with the carcinogen 1,3-butadiene. Exposure occurs mainly through inhalation. This chemical has been found to increase mammary tumors in rodents.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of chemicals that occur naturally in coal, crude oil and gasoline. One of the more common PAHs is naphthalene. Some cosmetics and shampoos are made with coal tar and therefore may contain PAHs. They have been shown to increase risk for breast cancer.

Placental Extract

Placental extract is derived from human or animal placentas and is used in hair conditioners, shampoos and other grooming aids, particularly those marketed to women of color. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) has identified progesterone, the major hormonal contaminant in placental extracts, as a reasonably anticipated carcinogen.

Lead

Lead may be a contaminant in over 650 cosmetic products, including sunscreens, foundation, nail colors, lipsticks and whitening toothpaste. Lead is a proven neurotoxin, linked to learning, language and behavioral problems. It has also been linked to miscarriage, reduced fertility in men and women, and delays in puberty onset in girls.

Aluminum

Aluminum is found in some underarm antiperspirants. Like cadmium, aluminum is a metal that mimics estrogen and can also cause direct damage to DNA. Studies have not shown a direct causal link to breast cancer risk, but breast tissue has been shown to concentrate aluminum in the same area where the highest proportion of breast cancers are originally diagnosed.

Sunscreen

Many sunscreens contain chemicals that exert significant estrogenic activity, as measured by the increase in proliferation rates of human breast cancer cells in vitro. Studies show these chemicals are accumulating in wildlife and humans.

        Fibroids are noncancerous tumors in the muscular wall of the uterus. Fibroids can be as small as a pea or as large as a grapefruit. The body's level of the estrogen hormone seems to play a role in the condition as fibroids tend to grow during pregnancy and shrink after menopause.
        Several alternative therapies offer ways to reduce estrogen levels naturally. The hope is to forestall or eliminate the need for a hysterectomy.

        Mind/Body Medicine for Uterine Fibroids

        For women with fibroids, mind/body medicine focuses on significantly reducing stress. This is vital because stress can interrupt the development and release of eggs (a process called ovulation). When this process doesn't happen, the body's level of estrogen remains unnecessarily high, precipitating fibroid development. Mind/body medicine offers many therapies that teach relaxation and how to lower stress levels, including:
        • forms of guided imagery and creative visualization
        • meditation
        • yoga (including breathing exercises and stretches)
        • biofeedback
        • dance therapy
        • hypnotherapy
        • spirituality
        Here's an example of a relaxation breathing exercise that would be part of a guided imagery regimen:
        • Wearing loose clothing, lie down or sit in a comfortable chair.
        • Slowly close your eyes. Begin breathing deeply and slowly.
        • When exhaling, imagine tension effortlessly flowing out of your body with each breath.
        • As you inhale, picture yourself filling your body with fresh air and energy.
        • Continue the slow, deep breathing for as long as you are comfortable.

        Hydrotherapy for Uterine Fibroids

        Hydrotherapy directed at the lower abdomen can stimulate blood circulation, which delivers nutrients and other beneficial substances to the cells and cleans away waste products. These treatments can also provide pain relief. Castor oil, made from the leaves of the castor oil plant, is commonly applied to the lower abdomen as a warm pack.
        The cold-pressed oil contains a substance that boosts the action of cells important to the immune system. Alternating hot and cold sitz baths can also be effective.

        Nutritional Therapy for Uterine Fibroids

        According to nutritional therapy, diet and supplements can stabilize or even lower the levels of estrogen in the body. As estrogen amounts drop, existing fibroids should shrink and new ones can be prevented. Diet and supplements may also reduce some of the symptoms of fibroids.
        One of the liver's roles in the body is to break down estrogens. Therefore, the diet should allow the liver to do its work and not include foods that can tax this organ. These taxing foods to be avoided include:
        • sugar
        • meat
        • dairy products
        • alcohol
        In addition, meat and dairy products can be a source of hormones (including estrogen) from livestock. Because they are also high in fat and estrogen is stored in fat cells, these foods may cause additional problems for women with fibroids. Instead, focus on eating fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, nuts, and raw seeds. These steps should also result in a diet that's high in fiber and low in fat.
        The B vitamins also aid the liver and are recommended. They can be added in the form of whole foods (such as lentils, rice bran, and blackstrap molasses) or supplements. Vitamin B6, in particular, enhances the breakdown and removal of estrogen from the body.
        Natural plant estrogens, called phytoestrogens, can actually compete with human estrogen in the body, resulting in an overall lower level of estrogen. Soybeans are a good food source of this substance and can be used as a whole cooked bean or in its other forms, including tofu, tempeh, and soy milk.
        Researchers have linked heavy menstrual bleeding with low levels of vitamin A in the blood. One study gave women doses of vitamin A for 15 days, after which time menstrual bleeding was reduced in about 90 percent of the patients. To achieve proper levels of vitamin A in the body, most practitioners of nutritional therapy recommend eating foods rich in beta-carotene (such as carrots and sweet potatoes) or taking beta-carotene supplements. A naturopathic physician may recommend a program of several supplements to normalize estrogen levels, including B vitamins; vitamin E; beta-carotene; cysteine, methionine, choline, inositol (to help the liver metabolize estrogen and other substances more efficiently); and iron (if the fibroids cause heavy menstrual bleeding and anemia). Dietary recommendations include adopting a low-fat, high-fiber diet and avoiding meat, dairy products, eggs, refined sugar, and caffeine.

        Other Therapies for Uterine Fibroids

        • Acupressure for Uterine Fibroids -- Points along the liver and spleen channels are often targeted for symptom relief.
        • Herbal Medicine for Uterine Fibroids -- Some herbs that can ease the symptoms of fibroids are blue cohosh, dong quai, and wild cherry.
        • Homeopathy for Uterine Fibroids -- Remedies for short-term relief of symptoms can be very effective, but a careful diagnosis by a professional is necessary to tailor a long-term remedy for fibroids.
        • Detoxification, Fasting, and Colon Therapy for Uterine Fibroids -- Several types of treatments can remove toxins and prevent certain organs (such as the liver) from being overworked. These therapies can also alleviate constipation and hemorrhoids related to fibroids.

        VEGETARIANS - ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH VITAMIN. B12?


        More and more people are choosing to skip the meat in order to reduce their carbon footprint. I rarely eat meat, for sustainability reasons, so the scare of not getting enough B12 hits home for me. Especially considering that Vitamin B12 is essential to your genetic cellular makeup.         Breast cancer risk rises in postmenopausal women as their body mass index climbs. The study found eating a diet high in tomatoes had a positive effect on the level of hormones that play a role in regulating fat and sugar metabolism.

        "The advantages of eating plenty of tomatoes and tomato-based products, even for a short period, were clearly evident in our findings," said the study''s first author, Adana Llanos, PhD, MPH, who is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Rutgers University. "Eating fruits and vegetables, which are rich in essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals such as lycopene, conveys significant benefits. Based on this data, we believe regular consumption of at least the daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables would promote breast cancer prevention in an at-risk population."

        The longitudinal cross-over study examined the effects of both tomato-rich and soy-rich diets in a group of 70 postmenopausal women. For 10 weeks, the women ate tomato products containing at least 25 milligrams of lycopene daily. For a separate 10-week period, the participants consumed at least 40 grams of soy protein daily. Before each test period began, the women were instructed to abstain from eating both tomato and soy products for two weeks.

        When they followed the tomato-rich diet, participants'' levels of adiponectin - a hormone involved in regulating blood sugar and fat levels - climbed 9 percent. The effect was slightly stronger in women who had a lower body mass index.

        "The findings demonstrate the importance of obesity prevention," Llanos said. "Consuming a diet rich in tomatoes had a larger impact on hormone levels in women who maintained a healthy weight."

        The soy diet was linked to a reduction in participants'' adiponectin levels. Researchers originally theorized that a diet containing large amounts of soy could be part of the reason that Asian women have lower rates of breast cancer than women in the United States, but any beneficial effect may be limited to certain ethnic groups, Llanos said.

        Other authors of the study include: J. Peng and M.L. Pennell of the Ohio State University; M.Z. Vitolins of Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC; and J.L. Krok, C.R. Degraffinreid and E.D. Paskett of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

        The study, "Effects of Tomato and Soy on Serum Adipokine Concentrations in Postmenopausal Women at Increased Breast Cancer Risk: A Cross-over Dietary Intervention Trial," was published online, ahead of print.

        Sugar On The Brain: Glucose Levels Related to Risk of Alzheimer’s

        High blood sugar levels not only increase risk of diabetes and heart disease, but can also lead to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

        Score another one for naturopathy and integrative medicine. We’ve been saying all along that type-2 diabetes not only increases the risk for cardiovascular disease, but influences brain function, including mood and memory. Now researchers are linking high glucose levels with Alzheimer’s disease.
        It’s well known that diabetes is a risk factor for vascular dementia. This type of dementia is the result of brain damage caused by blocked blood flow to the brain. Sounds simple, but it’s more complex than expected, and very expensive.
        Alzheimer’s and Diabetes—the Connection
        Alzheimer’s costs the U.S. $130 billion every year, and the expense is rising. The good news is that lowering glucose levels is not only possible with natural means, but lower glucose levels can reverse memory loss.
        We are just learning Alzheimer’s disease is one of the potential complications of type-2 diabetes. This kind of diabetes happens because the liver, muscle, and fat cells become insensitive to insulin—the hormone that controls glucose (blood sugar) that tells cells to stop absorbing glucose from the blood.
        No doubt about it: the cause of diabetes-2 is over eating sweet foods and eating the wrong kinds of fats. These foods dump lots of sugar in the blood, which causes insulin to spike. The body cells cannot handle high levels of insulin, so they stop responding to it, which allows glucose levels in the blood to rise. This condition is referred to as insulin resistance, and it’s associated with diabetes-2, but also can occur in those who have a pre-diabetic state.
        Our brains love sugar. Brain cells use two times more energy than other cells in the body. But too much triggers a cascade of problems. New research indicates that brain cells can also become insulin resistant. When glucose builds up inside your head, it’s like having diabetes in your brain.
        Too much sugar also reduces the production of a brain chemical known as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Without enough BDNF, our brains can’t form new memories. Researchers found that levels of BDNF are very low in people with diabetes and pre-diabetes.
        What’s Your Glucose Level?
        A glucose level (as measured in a blood test) above 126 mg/dL is the marker for a clinical diagnosis of diabetes. Normal glucose levels are less than 100 mg/dL when tested in the morning before breakfast, and less than 140 mg/dL two hours after eating.
        Most healthy people have glucose levels before meals between 70 to 80 mg/dL. But there are individual variations. Some people are healthy, and not hypoglycemic, with levels between 60 to 70 mg/dL, while others can have glucose as high as 90 mg/dL and be healthy.
        In my patients, I’ve found that the optimal health level is between 75 to 84 mg/dL. I consider a desirable range to be between 70 to 90 mg/dL, not 99 mg/dL allowed by conventional medicine. In my clinical experience, many people can have early stage insulin resistance, and therefore should be considered pre-diabetic, with glucose levels between 90-105 mg/dL.
        When I first started practicing years ago, the glucose level for diabetes was 110 mg/dL (now it’s 126). However, bottom line is that the higher the glucose level, the greater the disease.
        What’s Your A1C?
        Another important test for monitoring your blood sugar is hemoglobin A1c. Glycated hemoglobin (hemoglobin A1c, so simply A1C) is a form of hemoglobin measured in the blood to estimate the average plasma glucose concentration over about five months.
        When too much glucose accumulates in the blood, sugars attach to hemoglobin A1C. When integrative medicine doctors want to learn how well patients are processing their body’s glucose, they measure A1C and fasting glucose. Too much A1C is associated with a worsening of many diseases, as well as accelerating aging.

        Natural Solutions for Lowering Glucose and A1C
        The solution that works 99 percent of the time is to stop eating refined sugars. Of course, a complete change of dietary choices results is normalization of glucose and A1C. Eat whole, fresh foods. Eat more vegetables. Consume less fructose (and even naturally occurring fructose in fruit juices and whole fruits), and increase the healthy fats and oils like omega-3s from fish oil (and stop eating unhealthy trans fats). Lifestyle choices make a big difference: sit less and exercise every day.
        If standard dietary changes and exercise aren’t enough, consider going vegan for three months. Research shows that a low-fat, low-calorie vegetarian diet helps weight loss, lowers glucose and A1c, and improves insulin sensitivity.
        Nutritional supplements also help, including vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, glucose tolerance factor chromium, and green coffee bean extract. Researchers found that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was improved with green coffee bean extract. In high dosages (over 1,000 mg), if helped research subjects lose weight, and it is reported to also help lower blood pressure.
        Five Ways to Lower Glucose and A1C
        1. Eat a Plant-Based Diet—for faster results, go vegetarian/vegan for three months.
        2. Exercise Vigorously Every Day
        3. Take Omega-3 Fish Oil—1,000 mg with meals
